In 2003, Anthony Junior founded Florida Conservation, Inc., a fuel reclamation company in Miami Springs. Anthony Junior holds a master of business administration from Miami’s Florida International University (FIU), which was recently awarded $3.4 million to study the Zika virus in an effort to curb its transmission.
The funding has been divided among various FIU departments and schools. The Florida Department of Health has awarded $2 million to FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine to explore how Zika crosses the blood brain barrier to kill brain cells. The same agency awarded $200,000 to FIU’s Biomolecular Sciences Institute to augment research related to mosquito genetics. The institute also received $1.2 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to participate in a multi-university collaborative that aims to fight the transmission of mosquito-borne illnesses, including Zika.
This research is especially relevant in South Florida, which has been hit hard by Zika due to its warm, humid climate.
